About GoBoat
What is GoBoat, and how does it work?
GoBoat is a self-drive electric picnic boat experience that lets you explore the water with your own private group, with no boat licence or previous boating experience required. Each GoBoat is designed for relaxed cruising and features a central picnic table, making it ideal for sightseeing, socialising, and enjoying food and drinks on the water.
Standard GoBoats can accommodate up to 8 people, and before departure, your group receives a safety briefing and instructions on how to operate the boat. GoBoat operates from multiple locations across Australia, giving locals and visitors an easy way to enjoy the waterways at their own pace.
GoBoat is designed to be simple to drive, even if you have never driven a boat before. Before you set off, the GoBoat team will give you a safety briefing, show you how to operate the boat, explain where you can travel, and answer any questions.
The boats are powered by an electric motor and use a simple tiller-steering system. Once your briefing is complete, you and your group can head out and enjoy the waterways at your own pace.
GoBoat is made for relaxed cruising, so you can focus on the scenery, your picnic, and spending time with the people onboard.
Do I need a boat licence to drive a GoBoat?
No. You do not need a boat licence or previous boating experience to drive a GoBoat. The boats are designed for relaxed, low-speed cruising and are simple for first-time boaters to operate.
Before you leave the dock, the GoBoat team will give you a safety briefing and show you how to steer, control the boat, and navigate the approved cruising area.
GoBoats are powered by an electric motor and use a simple tiller-steering system, so once you’ve completed the briefing, you can take the helm and enjoy exploring the water at your own pace.
Is GoBoat easy to drive if I’ve never driven a boat before?
Yes. GoBoat is easy to drive, even if you have no previous boating experience. The boats travel at a relaxed, low speed and use a simple steering system, making them straightforward for first-time boaters to operate.
Before you leave the dock, the GoBoat team will show you how to steer, slow down, stop and safely navigate the approved cruising area. You’ll also receive a safety briefing before departure.
Because GoBoat is designed for calm, social cruising rather than high-speed boating, most guests feel comfortable driving within a short time.
GoBoats cruise at around 4 knots, or approximately 6–7 km/h. They are designed for relaxed, low-speed cruising, giving you time to enjoy the scenery, food, drinks and company while exploring the waterways.
The slower speed also makes GoBoat easy to control for first-time boaters. Before departure, the team will explain the local cruising area, relevant speed limits and how to navigate safely.
How many people can fit on a GoBoat?
A standard GoBoat can accommodate up to 8 people, including children and babies. The boats are designed around a central picnic table, so your group can sit together, socialise, eat, and enjoy the experience while you cruise.
That makes GoBoat a good fit for couples, families, groups of friends, birthdays, and other small celebrations. If your group is larger than 8 people, you can usually book multiple boats and cruise together, subject to availability and local operating conditions.
For safety, the total number of passengers on board must stay within the capacity limit for your specific GoBoat and location.

Is GoBoat private hire?
Yes. When you book a GoBoat, the boat is for your group only, you do not share it with other customers. That means you can enjoy the experience at your own pace with your friends, family, partner, or colleagues.
Private hire makes GoBoat a good option for birthdays, dates, family outings, catch-ups with friends, and small group celebrations where you want your own space rather than joining a public cruise.
You are also in control of the experience: after your safety briefing, your group can drive the boat yourselves, choose how to spend your time on the water, and enjoy food, drinks, and conversation without sharing the boat with strangers.
Can someone else drive the GoBoat during my booking?
Yes. More than one person in your group can usually take a turn driving the GoBoat, provided each driver meets the local age and safety requirements and follows the instructions given during the pre-departure briefing.
GoBoats are designed to be simple to operate, so it is common for different members of the group to take turns at the tiller during the trip.
The person driving at any time is responsible for operating the boat safely, following local boating rules, and staying within the approved cruising area. If alcohol is being consumed onboard, the designated driver must also comply with the relevant local laws and GoBoat’s safety requirements.
Can I hire a skipper to drive the GoBoat for me?
GoBoat is primarily a self-drive experience, so a skipper is not normally included with your booking. Part of the experience is taking the helm yourself, and you do not need a boat licence or previous boating experience to do so.
Before departure, the GoBoat team will provide a safety briefing and show your nominated driver how to operate and steer the boat safely.
If you would prefer not to drive yourself, feel free to contact our team before booking. While skipper options are not part of our standard hire, we may be able to help with alternative arrangements or suggest the best option for your group.
How old do you have to be to drive a GoBoat?
You must be at least 18 years old to be the nominated driver of a GoBoat. The driver is responsible for operating the boat safely, following the pre-departure briefing, and complying with local boating rules throughout the hire.
You do not need a boat licence or previous boating experience, and our team will show you how to steer, control the boat, and navigate the approved cruising area before you depart.
Other adults in your group may also be able to take a turn driving, provided they meet the same age and safety requirements.
Are GoBoats wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, GoBoats are not currently wheelchair accessible. Boarding requires guests to step down from the marina onto the boat, and wheelchairs cannot be safely accommodated onboard.
Guests with limited mobility who can board with assistance may still be able to enjoy the experience, depending on their individual needs and the facilities available at each location. Please contact your preferred GoBoat location before booking so our team can discuss the boarding process and any support that may be available.
Are GoBoats accessible for guests with limited mobility?
Guests are required to step into and out of the boat, which may not be suitable for everyone. Our staff will assist guests with boarding and disembarking where safely possible.
If you or someone in your group has limited mobility, please contact your GoBoat location before booking. Our team can explain the boarding process and discuss whether the experience will be suitable for your individual needs. GoBoats are not currently wheelchair accessible.
Booking and Pricing
How much does it cost to hire a GoBoat?
GoBoat pricing varies by location, hire duration and booking date, with prices charged per boat rather than per person. A standard GoBoat can carry up to 8 people, so the total hire cost can be shared across your group.
Some locations offer one-hour hires from around $149 per boat, with longer two and three-hour bookings also available. Longer hires can offer better value per hour and give you more time to explore, enjoy your picnic and relax on the water.
GoBoat can be a great-value option for families, groups of friends, birthdays and other small group outings because you’re paying for the boat, not individual tickets.
For the most accurate and up-to-date price, select your preferred GoBoat location, date and hire duration on the booking page.
What is GoBoat’s cancellation policy?
GoBoat offers two cancellation options when booking: the Standard Cancellation Policy and an optional Cancellation Warranty for added flexibility.
Under the Standard Policy:
Cancel at least 72 hours before your booking to receive a refund.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your booking to receive a voucher/booking credit.
You can reschedule your booking up to 24 hours before departure.
If you add the Cancellation Warranty, you can receive a refund, voucher or reschedule your booking up to 4 hours before departure.
The Cancellation Warranty is available for an additional fee when you book. For example, on a $249 booking, the Cancellation Warranty adds $19.95, bringing the total to $268.95. The exact additional cost will be shown during the booking process.
Catering and other add-ons may have separate cancellation conditions, so please check the terms shown when booking.
How long before my sail time do I have to be there?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled sail out time. This is to ensure that there is time for the safety briefing and demonstration. If you are late, you will spend less time on the water, as your boat will still be due back by the agreed time when you made your booking.
I can see that you are fully booked. Is it possible to get on a waiting list?
Occasionally, GoBoat may have waiting lists for special events. However, typically all availability is shown on the website, and cancellations or other factors may cause available times to appear again.
How do you book a boat to hire?
You can book right here on our website with instant confirmation. It requires a credit/debit card to book a boat.
How many boats do you have? And how many people is the maximum?
GoBoat has a fleet of 50+ boats in Australia. Typically, you can book 2-3 boats at a time from each location by booking online. If you require a group or corporate booking, we suggest emailing ahoy@goboat.com.au to enquire about availability.
What GoBoat hire duration should I choose?
The best GoBoat hire duration depends on how much time you want for cruising, eating, sightseeing and relaxing on the water.
A shorter hire is ideal for a quick experience, while a longer booking gives you more time to explore and is often better suited to birthdays, picnics, dates, family outings and group catch-ups. The ideal duration may also depend on your GoBoat location and how far you would like to travel within the approved cruising area.
If you’re having a great time and want to stay out longer, an extension may be available on the day, subject to boat availability and operating hours. Additional hire fees will apply, so please contact the GoBoat team before your scheduled return time to check.
If you’re unsure which duration to book, contact our team and we’ll help you choose the best option.
How far in advance should I book, and can I book GoBoat on the same day?
We recommend booking your GoBoat as early as possible, especially for weekends, public holidays, school holidays and popular time slots, as availability can fill quickly.
If you already know your preferred date and time, booking ahead gives you the best chance of securing the option that suits your plans. Larger groups requiring multiple boats should also book early so the boats can be reserved together.
Same-day bookings may still be available, depending on the location, date and remaining availability. For last-minute plans, check the booking page for your preferred GoBoat location to see current times.
If you can’t find a suitable time online, contact the GoBoat team — we may be able to help with last-minute availability, alternative times or another nearby option.
Can I change my GoBoat booking?
Yes. You may be able to change your GoBoat booking, depending on availability and the terms that apply to your reservation.
If you need to change your booking date, time, location, or hire duration, please call your GoBoat location directly as soon as possible. Our local teams are best placed to check availability and help with any changes.
You can find the phone number and contact details for your GoBoat location on our Contact Us page.
Any changes are subject to availability and, where applicable, a difference in price between your original booking and the new booking.
What happens if I am late for my GoBoat booking?
We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled GoBoat booking. This gives you enough time to check in, complete your safety briefing, and be ready to depart at your booked time.
If you arrive late, your time on the water may be reduced because your booking still needs to finish at the scheduled return time. We may not be able to extend your hire if another group is booked immediately after you.
If you know you are running late, please call your GoBoat location directly as soon as possible and our team will do their best to help. You can find the contact details for each location on our Contact Us page.
Is there a security deposit?
Yes. GoBoat requires a temporary security deposit when you arrive for your booking. Similar to hiring a car or checking into a hotel, a pre-authorisation hold is placed on your debit or credit card to cover potential damage or additional charges during your hire.
For standard GoBoats, the pre-authorisation is up to $200.
Once your GoBoat is returned safely, the hold is released immediately by GoBoat. Depending on your bank, it can take around 3–5 business days for the funds to become available again.
Please bring a physical debit or credit card and photo ID with you when you check in.
Are there any additional fees?
Your GoBoat hire price covers the boat for the duration you book, but additional fees may apply in certain circumstances or if you choose optional extras. Any optional add-ons available for your booking will be shown during the booking process.
For example, Cancellation Protection is currently available on eligible bookings for $19.95 per boat, giving you additional flexibility to cancel or reschedule up to 4 hours before departure, subject to the applicable terms.
Additional charges or penalties may also apply if the boat is returned damaged or requires excessive cleaning, or if GoBoat’s hire conditions and safety rules are not followed. In some circumstances, this may involve deductions from or forfeiture of the security deposit.
Some refunds may also exclude transaction processing fees charged through the payment platform.
For the clearest picture of your total cost, check the price and any optional extras shown during checkout for your chosen location and booking.
Can I buy a GoBoat gift voucher?
Yes. GoBoat gift vouchers are available and make a great gift for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or anyone who would prefer an experience over a physical gift.
Gift vouchers can be used towards a GoBoat experience and are valid for 3 years from the date of purchase.
When purchasing your gift voucher, be sure to select the correct GoBoat location, as vouchers are linked to the location selected at purchase.
If you would like to change the location of your gift voucher after purchasing, please contact the GoBoat team and we’ll be happy to help.
Gift vouchers are ideal for couples, families and groups of friends looking to enjoy a shared experience on the water.

Can I book multiple GoBoats for a large group?
Yes. You can book multiple GoBoats for the same date and time, subject to availability at your chosen location. With up to 8 people on each standard GoBoat, booking multiple boats is a great option for birthdays, family gatherings, social events, team outings and corporate functions.
For groups of 16 people or more, we recommend contacting our team so we can help coordinate your booking. Larger group bookings may also have inbound group rates to account for the additional staffing, coordination and safety requirements involved in managing multiple boats at the same time.
You can also visit our Group & Corporate Bookings page for more information and to submit an enquiry.
For the best availability, especially if you need several boats departing together, we recommend booking as early as possible.
What to Bring
What should I bring on a GoBoat?
For a comfortable GoBoat trip, we recommend bringing sun protection, weather-appropriate clothing, food and drinks if you want a picnic, and anything else you need to enjoy your time on the water.
Useful things to bring include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a light jacket or jumper, drinking water, and a phone or camera for photos. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drinks.
We recommend keeping belongings to a sensible amount so there is plenty of room for everyone onboard. Before your trip, it is also worth checking the weather forecast so you can dress appropriately for the conditions.
If you are unsure whether a particular item is allowed onboard, contact your GoBoat location before your booking and the team can help.
Are life jackets included in the price of the boat hire?
Yes. Life jackets and required safety equipment are included in the price of your GoBoat hire.
We provide life jackets in a range of sizes, from infant through to adult options. All children under 12 are required to wear a life jacket while onboard.
Adult life jackets are stored onboard, while life jackets for children and infants can be provided by the GoBoat team at check-in.
Do I need enclosed shoes on a GoBoat?
No. Enclosed shoes are not generally required to enjoy a GoBoat, but we recommend wearing comfortable, secure footwear that is suitable for stepping on and off the boat.
Flat shoes, sneakers, sandals, or other practical footwear are usually the best choice. We recommend avoiding high heels or anything that may be difficult to walk in around the dock or onboard.
If your chosen GoBoat location has any specific footwear or safety requirements, the local team will let you know before departure.
Can I bring an esky on a GoBoat?
Yes. You can bring your own esky or cooler onboard your GoBoat, provided it is a sensible size and does not obstruct seating, walkways, or the safe operation of the boat.
An esky is a great way to keep drinks and picnic food cold during your trip, especially on warmer days or longer bookings.
If you do not want to bring your own, all GoBoat locations also offer esky hire with ice for an additional $25. You can add this to your booking when you reserve your GoBoat.
If you are unsure whether a larger esky will fit comfortably onboard, contact your GoBoat location before your booking and the team can advise.
Can I bring bags onboard a GoBoat?
Yes. You can bring bags onboard your GoBoat, but we recommend keeping personal belongings to a sensible amount so everyone has enough space to sit comfortably and move around safely.
Small backpacks, handbags, picnic bags and similar items are welcome. Larger bags should be kept to a minimum, particularly when travelling with the maximum group of eight guests. Please keep all belongings clear of walkways, the driver’s area and safety equipment throughout your cruise.
If you are travelling with suitcases or larger luggage, limited storage may be available at The Spit Mosman, Cabarita Point and Akuna Bay marinas only. Items are stored at the owner’s risk, and availability cannot be guaranteed. Please contact your GoBoat location before your booking to confirm whether storage is available.
Can I bring decorations or a birthday cake on a GoBoat?
Yes. You’re welcome to bring a birthday cake and simple decorations onboard your GoBoat for birthdays, proposals and other celebrations.
The central picnic table makes it easy to enjoy cake, snacks and other food with your group. We recommend bringing cakes and food in secure containers so they are easy to transport and protected while boarding and cruising.
Lightweight decorations are also welcome, provided they can be secured safely and do not interfere with the driver, walkways, visibility or safety equipment. Please avoid anything that could blow into the water, create excessive mess or damage the boat.
You’re welcome to bring candles, plates, napkins and other simple party items. If you are planning a larger or more elaborate setup, contact your GoBoat location before your booking so the team can advise what will work onboard.
Guests are responsible for removing all decorations and rubbish within their booked hire period.
Can I bring a speaker on a GoBoat?
Yes. You can bring a small portable speaker onboard your GoBoat, provided it is used at a respectful volume and does not interfere with the safe operation of the boat or disturb others on the water.
A speaker can be a great addition for birthdays, celebrations, dates, or a relaxed cruise with friends.
If you do not want to bring your own, GoBoat also offers portable speaker hire for an additional $25 at participating locations. You can add this to your booking when available.
Please keep music at a reasonable volume and make sure the speaker is secure and clear of the driver’s area, walkways, and safety equipment.
Food and Drinks
Can I bring my own food on a GoBoat?
Yes. You are welcome to bring your own food onboard your GoBoat, making it easy to turn your cruise into a picnic on the water.
Each standard GoBoat has a central picnic table, so your group can sit together, eat, drink, and enjoy the scenery while you cruise.
You can bring anything from simple snacks and grazing platters to takeaway food, birthday cake, or a full picnic. We recommend choosing food that is easy to serve and transport, and bringing any plates, napkins, cutlery, or containers you may need.
Please keep all food, packaging, and rubbish secure while onboard so nothing ends up in the water.
Can I bring my own drinks and alcohol on a GoBoat?
Yes. You can bring your own drinks onboard, including water, soft drinks and alcohol, provided you follow GoBoat’s alcohol policy and local boating laws.
Alcohol is limited to up to 2 standard drinks per person for the duration of the hire, and the designated driver must remain at 0.00% blood alcohol concentration and cannot consume alcohol while operating the boat.
GoBoat does not supply plastic cups or drinkware, so please bring your own if needed. We recommend avoiding glassware where possible for safety, although wine and other beverage bottles are permitted.
Please bring a reasonable amount of alcohol for your group. GoBoat reserves the right to refuse or deny a hire if guests appear intoxicated or arrive with excessive quantities of alcohol.
You can also bring your own esky, or hire an esky with ice from GoBoat for an additional $25.
Is there a table on the GoBoat, and can we have a picnic onboard?
Yes. Standard GoBoats are designed around a central picnic table, making them ideal for eating, drinking and socialising while you cruise. The seating is arranged around the table so your group can face each other and enjoy the experience together.
You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, snacks, grazing platters, takeaway food, birthday cake and drinks onboard. Alcohol is permitted within GoBoat’s policy of up to 2 standard drinks per person, while the designated driver must remain at 0.00% blood alcohol concentration.
We recommend bringing food that is easy to serve and secure while cruising, along with any plates, cups, napkins or cutlery you may need.
You can also bring your own esky, or hire an esky with ice from GoBoat for an additional $25.
Can I order food for my GoBoat trip?
Yes. Some GoBoat locations offer food, catering, or picnic options that can be added to your booking, depending on what is available at that location.
These options can make your trip easier if you would rather have food organised in advance instead of bringing everything yourself. Availability, menus, and pricing can vary between locations, so check the booking extras for your chosen GoBoat location.
You are also always welcome to bring your own food onboard, whether that is a picnic, takeaway, grazing platter, snacks, or a birthday cake.
If you are planning a special occasion or larger group and want help organising food, contact your GoBoat location directly and the team can let you know what options are available.
What food is best to bring on a GoBoat?
The best food to bring on a GoBoat is easy to serve, easy to share, and simple to keep secure while you cruise.
Picnic-style foods work especially well, including grazing platters, sandwiches, wraps, fruit, cheese, crackers, dips, pastries, snacks, and takeaway meals that do not require much preparation onboard.
We recommend avoiding anything too messy, difficult to serve, or likely to spill easily. Bring any plates, cups, napkins, cutlery, or serving utensils you may need, as these are not automatically supplied.
You can bring your own esky to keep food and drinks cold, or hire an esky with ice from GoBoat for an additional $25 and add it to your booking.
We ask that you do not feed the birds or marine life.
Families, Children and Accessibility
Is GoBoat suitable for families, children and babies?
Yes. GoBoat is a family-friendly experience suitable for parents, children, babies, grandparents and multi-generational groups. The boats are designed for relaxed cruising, with seating around a central picnic table so everyone can enjoy the experience together.
Children and babies are welcome onboard and all children aged 12 and under are required to wear a life jacket while on the boat. GoBoat supplies life jackets at no extra charge, with sizes available from infant through to adult.
Children and babies count towards the boat’s total passenger capacity, so make sure everyone in your group is included when booking.
Families are also welcome to bring their own food, drinks, snacks and picnic items, making GoBoat a great option for family days out, school holidays, birthdays and special occasions.
If you’re travelling with a baby or young child and would like to check life jacket sizing or suitability before your trip, contact your GoBoat location and the team will be happy to help.
Do children count toward the GoBoat passenger limit?
Yes. Children and babies count toward the total passenger capacity of the boat. A standard GoBoat can carry up to 8 people in total, regardless of age.
That means a baby or child is counted in the same way as an adult when calculating how many people can be onboard.
If you are booking for a family, make sure everyone is included in your total group size so you stay within the boat’s capacity limit. For larger family groups, you can book multiple GoBoats, subject to availability.
Do children have to wear life jackets on a GoBoat?
Yes. All children aged 12 and under are required by law to wear a life jacket while onboard a GoBoat.
GoBoat provides suitable child and infant-size life jackets at no extra charge, so you do not need to bring your own unless you prefer to.
Our team will make sure the correct life jackets are available before departure and can help with fitting if needed.
Adults are also provided with life jackets onboard, and the GoBoat team will explain all relevant safety requirements during the pre-departure briefing.
Can I go on a GoBoat while pregnant?
Yes, pregnant guests are generally welcome onboard GoBoat. Our electric picnic boats travel at a gentle speed within designated cruising areas, and staff will assist with boarding where safely possible.
However, guests must be able to step into and out of the boat, and water conditions may occasionally cause movement. Every pregnancy is different, so we recommend considering your individual comfort and mobility and seeking advice from your healthcare provider if you have any concerns before booking.
Please let your GoBoat location know before your trip if you may require additional assistance when boarding or disembarking.
Dogs and Pets
Is GoBoat pet friendly and can I bring my dog onboard?
Yes. GoBoat is pet friendly at most locations, so you can bring your dog or other suitable pet along for the experience.
We recommend keeping pets under control at all times and bringing anything they may need, such as water, a bowl, lead and towel. You’re also welcome to bring a pet life jacket if you would like the extra peace of mind.
The exception is GoBoat Akuna Bay, where dogs and other pets are not permitted because the location is within a national park.
If you’re unsure whether your pet can join you at a particular GoBoat location, contact the local team before booking.
Can I bring more than one dog on a GoBoat?
Yes. You can usually bring more than one dog onboard a GoBoat, provided your pets can be accommodated safely and comfortably with the rest of your group.
Keep in mind that dogs share the available space onboard with your passengers, food, drinks, and other belongings, so we recommend considering the size and temperament of your pets when planning your booking.
All dogs should remain under control throughout the trip, and we recommend bringing a lead, water, a bowl, and anything else they may need while onboard.
Dogs and other pets are not permitted at GoBoat Akuna Bay because the location is within a national park.
If you are planning to bring multiple dogs, particularly larger breeds, feel free to contact your chosen GoBoat location before booking and our team can advise on what will work best.
Should my dog wear a life jacket on a GoBoat?
A life jacket is not generally required for dogs, but you are welcome to bring one if you would like your pet to wear one while onboard.
A dog life jacket can be a good idea for puppies, older dogs, smaller breeds, dogs that are not confident swimmers, or pets that are unfamiliar with being on a boat.
We also recommend bringing a lead, fresh water, a bowl, and a towel, and keeping your dog supervised and under control throughout the trip.
Dogs and other pets are not permitted at GoBoat Akuna Bay because the location is within a national park.
Are dogs allowed at every GoBoat location?
Dogs are welcome at most GoBoat locations, but not at every location.
The main exception is GoBoat Akuna Bay, where dogs and other pets are not permitted because the location is within a national park.
At pet-friendly locations, we recommend keeping your dog under control at all times and bringing a lead, water, a bowl, and anything else they may need during the trip.
If you are unsure whether your chosen location allows pets, check the location page or contact the local GoBoat team before booking.
Safety and Rules
Do adults have to wear life jackets on a GoBoat?
Adults do not generally have to wear a life jacket for the entire GoBoat trip, unless required by local law, weather conditions, or the GoBoat team for safety reasons.
Life jackets are provided onboard for all guests at no extra charge, and our team will explain when they should be worn during the pre-departure safety briefing.
Children aged 12 and under are required by law to wear a life jacket while onboard.
If conditions change during your trip or the team gives you a specific safety instruction, please follow that guidance and wear the life jacket provided.
What safety briefing do you receive before driving a GoBoat?
Before every GoBoat hire, your group receives a safety and operating briefing so the nominated driver knows how to use the boat and what to expect on the water.
The briefing covers the basics of steering and controlling the GoBoat, how to slow down and stop, the approved cruising area, local navigation rules, and any hazards or conditions you should be aware of during your trip.
Our team will also explain the onboard safety equipment, including life jackets, and answer any questions before you leave the dock.
The aim is to make sure the driver feels confident and understands how to operate the boat safely before departure, even if they have never driven a boat before.
What happens if something goes wrong on the water?
If something goes wrong during your GoBoat trip, stay calm, follow the safety instructions from your pre-departure briefing, and contact the GoBoat team for assistance.
Before you leave the dock, our team will explain what to do if you have a problem with the boat, need help navigating, or are unsure about anything while you are on the water.
You should remain with the boat, keep all passengers safe, and avoid attempting anything that could put your group at risk.
If you need assistance during your booking, contact your GoBoat location directly and the team will guide you on what to do next.
Can I swim, jump off, dive from, or fish from a GoBoat?
No. Swimming, jumping, diving and fishing are not permitted from a GoBoat during your hire.
GoBoat is designed for relaxed cruising, sightseeing, picnics and socialising on the water, rather than swimming, water-entry activities or fishing.
For safety, all passengers must remain onboard while the boat is away from the dock unless specifically instructed otherwise by GoBoat staff. Please also leave fishing rods and other fishing equipment at home so there is plenty of room onboard for your group, food, drinks and personal belongings.
If you would like to include swimming or fishing as part of your day, we recommend planning this separately before or after your GoBoat booking at an appropriate location.
Can I leave the GoBoat unattended or dock somewhere else during my hire?
No. The GoBoat must not be left unattended and should only dock at the approved GoBoat departure and return point, unless the local team has specifically approved another location.
The nominated driver and group are responsible for the boat for the full duration of the hire. GoBoat is designed as a continuous self-drive cruise, so stopping at unapproved pontoons, jetties, marinas or other docking areas may not be permitted.
Before departure, the team will explain the approved cruising area and any local rules around stopping or docking. If you have a particular stop in mind, please ask your GoBoat location before departure.
Can I pick up or drop off passengers somewhere else?
No. Passengers should only board and leave the GoBoat at the designated GoBoat departure and return point, unless our team has specifically approved another arrangement.
Unplanned passenger pick-ups or drop-offs at other pontoons, jetties, marinas, or waterfront locations may not be safe or permitted.
Before departure, the GoBoat team will explain the approved cruising area and any local restrictions that apply to stopping or docking.
If you have a special request involving another pick-up or drop-off point, please contact your GoBoat location before your booking so the team can let you know whether it can be accommodated.
Where am I allowed to sail a GoBoat?
You must keep your GoBoat within the approved cruising area for your chosen location. Each GoBoat location has its own designated operating area based on local waterways, navigation rules, weather conditions, and safety requirements.
Before departure, our team will explain where you can and cannot go, highlight any restricted areas or local hazards, and make sure the nominated driver understands the recommended route.
Your actual cruising range can vary depending on conditions on the day. Wind, tide, current, and general water conditions can make parts of your trip quicker or slower, so the distance you are able to cover may change from one booking to another.
To help with navigation and safety, GoBoats use a state-of-the-art NEBO tracking system, allowing you to keep track of where you are throughout your hire. Our team can also monitor your location, which helps us support you if you need assistance or are unsure about your route.
If you have a particular landmark or destination you would like to reach, ask the local GoBoat team before departure. They can let you know whether it is realistic for your booking duration and the conditions that day.
How do I know where to go on a GoBoat?
Before you depart, the GoBoat team will explain the recommended cruising area, key landmarks, restricted zones, and how far you can realistically travel within your booking time.
Each GoBoat is also fitted with a NEBO tracking system, which helps you see where you are during your trip. Our team can monitor the boat’s location as well, so we can assist if you need help navigating or are unsure whether you are heading in the right direction.
Your route may vary depending on wind, tide, current, and local water conditions, so some trips may take a little longer or shorter than expected. We recommend allowing enough time to return to the dock by your scheduled finish time.
If there is a particular landmark, destination, or route you want to explore, ask the local GoBoat team before departure and they can let you know whether it is suitable for your booking.
What happens if I damage the GoBoat?
If a GoBoat is damaged during your hire, please tell the GoBoat team as soon as possible. The nominated driver is responsible for operating the boat safely and following the instructions provided during the pre-departure briefing.
A temporary security deposit is taken before departure to help cover potential damage or additional charges. If damage occurs, the team will assess what happened and let you know whether any costs apply under the terms of your booking.
Accidental bumps can happen, which is why we ask guests to follow the approved cruising area, maintain a safe speed, and take extra care around pontoons, other vessels, and restricted areas.
If you are unsure about anything while on the water, contact your GoBoat location straight away rather than taking a risk.
Can I smoke or vape on a GoBoat?
No. Smoking and vaping are not permitted onboard any GoBoat. Smoke, ash and heat can damage the boat’s canopy, upholstery and other equipment. Guests may be charged a cleaning, repair or replacement fee if smoking or vaping causes any damage or requires additional cleaning.
Weather
What happens if it rains during my GoBoat booking?
GoBoat can still operate in light rain, but bookings may be affected if weather conditions become unsafe. A little rain does not always mean your trip needs to be cancelled, so we recommend checking the forecast and dressing for the conditions.
If conditions such as strong winds, storms, or poor visibility make it unsafe to operate, the local GoBoat team may delay, reschedule, or cancel your booking in line with the applicable weather and cancellation policy.
Weather can also affect how far you are able to travel during your hire, as wind and water conditions may make some routes slower than usual.
If you are unsure about the weather on the day of your booking, please contact your GoBoat location directly before travelling and our team can give you the latest advice.
Does GoBoat operate in bad weather?
GoBoat only operates when conditions are considered safe for guests and our team. Light rain or cloudy weather does not necessarily stop a booking, but strong winds, storms, poor visibility, or other unsafe conditions may affect operations.
Because conditions can vary between locations, the local GoBoat team monitors the weather and waterways and will make the final decision on whether it is safe to operate.
If conditions are unsuitable, your booking may be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled in line with GoBoat’s weather and cancellation policy.
If you are concerned about the forecast on the day of your booking, contact your GoBoat location directly before travelling and the team can give you the most up-to-date advice.
What happens if GoBoat cancels my booking because of the weather?
If GoBoat determines that conditions are unsafe and cancels your booking, our team will contact you and provide the options available under our weather and cancellation policy.
Safety always comes first, so a booking may be cancelled if conditions such as strong winds, storms, poor visibility, or unsafe water conditions make it unsuitable to operate.
Depending on the circumstances and the terms of your booking, you may be offered a credit or the opportunity to reschedule your GoBoat experience for another date.
Weather decisions are made by the local GoBoat team based on the actual conditions at your location, which can differ from general weather forecasts.
If you are concerned about the forecast before your booking, contact your GoBoat location directly and the team can give you the latest advice.
Can I GoBoat in winter?
Yes. GoBoat can operate during winter, provided weather and water conditions are safe. Cooler months can be a great time to cruise, with quieter waterways and a more relaxed atmosphere.
We recommend dressing warmly and bringing a jacket or extra layer, as it can feel cooler on the water than it does on land.
GoBoat operates according to local weather and safety conditions, so strong winds, storms, or other unsafe conditions may affect your booking.
If you are unsure about the forecast on the day, contact your GoBoat location directly and the team can let you know what conditions are looking like.
Is there shade on a GoBoat?
Yes. Most GoBoats have a central canopy that provides shade over much of the seating and picnic table area, helping make the experience more comfortable on sunny days.
Melbourne is the exception. GoBoats in Melbourne do not have canopies due to bridge height restrictions along the cruising route.
Because you are still outdoors and on the water, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water, especially on warmer days.
If you forget, some GoBoat locations also sell sunscreen and hats, so check with the local team when you arrive.
What happens if it is very hot during my GoBoat booking?
GoBoat can operate in hot weather, provided conditions remain safe, but we recommend preparing for sun exposure and staying well hydrated throughout your trip.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and consider wearing light, breathable clothing. Most GoBoats have a central canopy that provides shade over much of the seating area, although Melbourne GoBoats do not have canopies due to bridge height restrictions.
If extreme heat or other weather conditions create a safety concern, the local GoBoat team may adjust operations or provide additional advice on the day.
If you forget sun protection, some GoBoat locations sell sunscreen and hats, so check with the team when you arrive.
What happens if it is windy during my GoBoat booking?
GoBoat can operate in light to moderate wind, but stronger winds may affect your route, cruising speed, or whether it is safe to operate at all.
Wind can make some parts of your trip slower or more challenging, especially when travelling against it, so the distance you can comfortably cover may be different from a calm day.
Our local team monitors conditions and will advise you before departure if there are any areas to avoid or if your recommended route needs to change. If conditions become unsafe, your booking may be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled in line with GoBoat’s weather policy.
If you are concerned about the forecast, contact your GoBoat location before heading in and the team can give you the most up-to-date advice.
